The Winning Prototype

Everything you should have ready before sending a hardware prototype request, so the quote lands accurate on the first try.

A 10-minute review that saves a week

Most prototype quotes get delayed because something is missing: a tolerance, a material spec, a quantity, or a critical dimension. Each missing detail costs a round-trip with your supplier, usually a day or more.

This checklist walks through the inputs Coredeq engineers ask for on a typical prototype quote. If you can answer everything below before you send the request, your quote will land in 24 hours and the parts will match what you actually need.

The checklist

Run through these before sending your next prototype request:

  1. Design and CAD

    • STEP, IGES, or native CAD file ready to share
    • 2D drawing with critical dimensions and tolerances called out
    • Part orientation and intended assembly direction noted
    • Critical-to-function (CTF) features identified
    • Any thread, insert, or hardware spec called out
  2. Material and finish

    • Target material (e.g. aluminum 6061, ABS, PC, PA66)
    • Surface finish requirement (Ra value, bead-blast, anodize, paint color)
    • Functional environment noted (UV, temperature, chemicals, contact with skin/food)
    • Regulatory needs (RoHS, REACH, UL, food-grade, medical)
  3. Quantity and timing

    • Number of parts needed for this prototype round
    • Target delivery date
    • Whether this is a one-off, an iteration set, or the start of a bridge run
    • Whether you need express timing (and what date matters most)
  4. Use case and intent

    • What the prototype is for (functional test, demo, customer pitch, certification)
    • Whether parts will be subjected to mechanical loads or environmental tests
    • Any prior version of the part or known pain points
    • Anyone else on your team who should be on the quote thread
  5. Logistics and admin

    • Shipping address and any customs requirements
    • Purchase order or invoicing entity confirmed
    • NDA in place if needed
    • Quote currency and payment terms

Frequently asked questions

Not always. For any feature that has a tolerance tighter than the default, a thread, a tapped hole, a fit, or a critical-to-function dimension, the 2D drawing makes the difference between a quote that matches your intent and one that does not. For simple parts, an annotated screenshot can work too.
Tell us how the part will be used and what it needs to do. Our engineers will recommend a material that fits your end-use and budget. The more you can share about environment, loads, and certifications, the better the recommendation.
Most quote delays come from missing inputs. With everything in this checklist confirmed up front, our engineers can quote on the first pass, typically within 24 hours, instead of going back and forth for clarifications.
Yes. Send what you have and flag what is still open. We will quote against best assumptions and update the price once you confirm the missing details.
